AbstractThe number of injury and fatality from road accident is a major problem that keeps increasing every year. Using only driving policies and disciplinary campaigns has limited action. These campaigns are, in practice, only for conscious-disciplinary drivers; therefore, it is interesting to find other alternatives that have capability of preventing car crash accident, especially for those drivers who may loose consciousness during driving. One good solution may be to develop a warning and controlling system that allows a vehicle to apply brake automatically to avoid crash. Toward developing a car crash avoidance system, this thesis focuses on a development and implementation of braking algorithm. The algorithm is developed from basic motion equations that are in term of distance, velocity, and deceleration. The information from driver braking behavior has been added to improve the algorithm. The simulation results show that required braking distance determined in this thesis are longer than the distance determined in other previous researches as a result of the assumption that the leading vehicle may be brought to stop immediately. The developed algorithm has been implemented on the radio control car with engine. From the field tests, the results show that the hardware need to be properly designed and installed to be robust to interference.
