Abstract | Flow characteristics and salinity intrusion into the Lower Meghna Estuary are important factors for the development of the irrigation systems. In the dry season, due to the reduction of freshwater from upstream, salinity intrusion problem affects the irrigation project development. In this study, one-dimensional hydrodynamic and salinity intrusion model in the Lower Meghna Estuary have been developed. The model results were calibrated and validated by using historical observed value at different stations along the four main river systems of this estuarine system. This study also presents the tide characteristic, by using harmonic analysis. It was found that the calibrated model can be used for predicting hydraulic characteristics and salinity intrusion in the river systems in the Lower Meghna Estuary. For stations along the Lower Meghna River salinity intrudes less due to high freshwater discharge. Whereas, the other these main branches (such as Buriswar, Bishkhali and Tentulia) salinity intrusion up to about 25 to 60 km upstream from model boundary. |
