Abstract | It is generally said that the non-government organization sponsored activities are functioning better than the government assisted activities. The present study does not cover the various aspects in detail. But in this comparative study two different irrigation systems are studied considering the system management activities and the intervention strategies used. The study was conducted in Andhi Khola Irrigation System (AK.IS, a non-government assisted) and Lamage Phant Irrigation System (LPIS, a government assisted) in western hilly region of Nepal. The questionnaire survey and other informal survey methods were carried out during the study. The findings of the study showed that the AK.IS has better water distribution, internal resource generation, and higher gross production value per household. The Andhi Khola system showing better for solving longitudinal inequity (head-tail) problems than Lamage Phant does. The change in cropping intensity after the assistance program in AK.IS and LPIS is 72 % and 37 % respectively. The increase in gross production value per hectare in AK.IS and LPIS is NRs 24,124 (US$ 355) and NRs 16,823 (US$ 247) respectively. The intervention strategies used by the non-government and government are highly appreciated in principle but less satisfied in practice. |
