Abstract | This study was aimed to estimate, compare and analyze the hydrodynamic pressure on dams. The solutions are also applied to Khlong Tha Dan dam to investigate the difference of the static and time-dependent hydrodynamic pressures. The study focused on Westergaard and Chopra solutions for hydrodynamic pressure. All the relevant data, such as the sections of the dam, the constructional drawing detail and reservoir data were obtained from the design criteria Khlong Tha Dan Dam of Royal Irrigation Department (RID) and the previous AIT thesis (Phiangsuwan 2004). The ground motion records were selected from many different earthquake motions, recorded on rock sites. Six selected ground motions in which the peak horizontal acceleration (PHA) ranges from 0.10g-0.689g were summarized. As Thailand is not supposed to be in seismically active zone, therefore, the maximum horizontal acceleration of 0.1g appears to be reasonable one to use in investigating dams founded on rock. For this reason the ground motion data have also been modified to a peak ground acceleration of 0.1g. Both the actual and modified ground accelerations data have been used to investigate the difference of the static and time-dependent hydrodynamic pressures on the dam. Computer programming was written both for Westergaard and Chopra method. The computer program written using the Chopra method was verified through the comparisons of the hydrodynamic pressures at the bottom of the reservoir for the ramp loading and north-south component of the El Centro earthquake ground motion with those in Tsai et al. (1990). With six earthquake records and the modified ground motion data to a PHA of 0.1g, the hydrodynamic pressures by Westergaard and Chopra solutions were compared for Khlong Tha Dan dam. And the differences of static and time-dependent hydrodynamic pressures were investigated. |
