Abstract | This study aims at the voltage control problems in power systems and application of
capacitors to power distribution systems, which is one of the most important aspects of
modern power system operation and planning. Voltage is one of the basic parameters
indicating the quality of supplied energy. Optimazation of voltage and reactive power,
together with economic load dispatch, ensures not only minimum cost but also reliable and
secure operation of the system.
The purpose of the study is to give the theoretical background to the methods of
voltage control, and applications of capacitors to improve voltage drop and power-loss in
power distribution systems, which are popularly used by utilities. Nowadays power capacitors
are much more efficient and are available to the electric utilities at a much lower cost.
In this study, the essential characteristics of the components of a power system will be
discussed. It is essential that these be fully understood before the study of large problems of
voltage control methods and application of capacitors to power distribution systems. |
