AbstractThe World-Wide-Web is less agent-friendly than we might hope. Most information on the Web is presented in loosely structured natural language text with no agent-readable semantics. HTML annotations structure the display of Web pages, but they provide virtually no insight into their content. The study illustrates the use of comparison-shopping agent. Given the homepages of several online shops, it can autonomously learn how to shop at those vendors. After learning, it is able to extract product information, and summarize the results for the user. A search engine's architecture was studied in details. This search engine can achieve this performance without sophisticated language processing, and require only minimal knowledge about different product domains. The on-line bookstores were selected for this study. The search engine relies on a combination of heuristic search, pattern matching, and inductive learning techniques.
