Abstract | Base isolation is currently being used as one of the most wildly accepted seismic protection systems that should considerably separate the superstructure from its foundation which is resting on a ground that is been subjected to seismic ground motions, thereby preserving the whole structure against earthquake forces in a sustainable manner. This study focuses on the use of Lead-Rubber Bearing to improve the seismic performance of steel moment frames. The seismic performance of fixed-base and base-isolated 5 story and 10 story 2D frames are determined. The seismic responses with respect to base shears, inter-story drifts and story accelerations are compared according to the installation of LRB isolation systems in the SMF. The main function of the base LRB isolator is to lengthen the structural vibration period by increasing lateral flexibility in the frame structure, so that the ground accelerations transferred into the superstructure can decrease. Time history analysis shows a significant reduction in base shear. In addition, they contribute towards reducing inter-story drifts. Story acceleration was also reduced in the isolated base. Finally, some ways of how the performance can be improved is emphasized herein through the results of nonlinear dynamic analyses. |
