AbstractEarthquakes are an eminent threat each country face and are capable of rescinding any existing structure to dust in a matter of seconds if proper designing is not done in order to resist these loads. In Sri Lanka which is a third world country with a developing economy, most of the existing structures are constructed without considering seismic activity making them highly vulnerable. In this study the specific focus is on a three story school structure constructed and registered under the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka, which harbors the youth and the future of Sri Lanka for the best part of the day. This study will assess the performance of the said structure under seismic activity which has return periods of 50 year, 475 year and 2475 year. Nonlinear static pushover analysis is used as the analysis method using which the performance of the structure is determined. The aid of the OpenSees nonlinear analysis software will be obtained for the analysis process. Also, the effects infill walls have on a bare frame structure under seismic loading would be discussed.
