Abstract | Earthquakes cause immense damage to human lives as well as property each year and in today’s world it is considered as one of major natural threats. In order to safeguard occupants and bystander from failure of structures, earthquake designed structures are built worldwide. Sri Lanka being a developing nation has not being constructing earthquake proof structures since late and most if not all structures which are built in the past are unprotected against seismic activity. In this assessment, a three story school structure which provides shelter to the youth of Sri Lanka will be assessed under seismic loads to obtain its performance level using nonlinear static pushover analysis method. For this purpose, the aid of the OpenSees nonlinear analysis software will be incorporated. The earthquake assessment will be conducted for earthquakes with return periods of 50 year, 475 year and 2475 year. Also an assessment on the effect infill walls have on the bare frame structure under seismic loading will be carried out. |
