AbstractIn today’s world, earthquakes are considered to be one of the major threats that cause heavy damage to human life as well as built up structures and the economy. Hence most of the developing countries in the world are nowadays constructing structures in order to withstand these seismic loads but Sri Lanka being a developing country has yet to mater the trend. Most of the structures built in Sri Lanka till now are not designed to withstand seismic loads and among them are school buildings which house the future of the country. The following study is carried out focusing on assessing the structural performance of a standard two story school structure which is registered under the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka. It will be analyzed for earthquakes with return periods of 50 year, 475 year and 2475 year using the nonlinear static pushover analysis. And the performance levels of the structure, for each three return period earthquakes will be identified. The software named OpenSees will be incorporated for the analysis process. In this assessment, a discussion about the effect of adding infill walls to a bare frame structure will also be included.
