Abstract | Traffic congestion at toll plazas causes much wastage of time and money. One solution to this problem is the usage of the tandem tollbooth. This study used a queuing-theory based simulation in MATLAB to find out the configuration of tandem tollbooths that would lead to the least time wasted per user, and the maximum throughput. It was found that using 4 tandem tollbooths is the ideal solution, leading to capacity increases of up to 126%. Sensitivity analysis of the results also revealed that maximum capacity of a tandem tollbooth arrangement decreases with increase in mean and standard deviation of the service time per vehicle. |
