AbstractIn the Information Systems (IS) design, generally, the inconsistent usage of terminologies occurs during process of designing. This problem causes difficulty for interoperation among systems. On the other hand, the domain knowledge of finished systems is rarely reused in designing the same or similar new systems; designers usually go to starting point so they have to spend a lot of time on new systems. Using ontology that represents knowledge sharing and reuse in some interesting domain can solve the above problems. The purpose of this thesis is to propose an approach based on ontology to IS design. The approach provides common terminologies and checking other types of knowledge, transformation of common terms or other local terms into special terms, checking consistency in the process of designing, reusing and sharing domain knowledge from previous projects in order to reduce time and cost, and enhance effectiveness for designing new systems. XML Declarative Description (XDD) language, an XML-based knowledge representation is used to represent ontology and computation data. It provides a more direct and succinct insight into the computation of and reasoning with XML-based knowledge. It has sufficient expressive power to represent information complex forms and to derive implicit information in XML-based knowledge. Native XML Equivalent Transformation (NxET), a new programming language, is used to implement semantic rules in terms of XDD expressions. NxET can directly and succinctly manipulate XML-based knowledge. NxET implements the equivalent transformation and computation of data, and derivation of implicit information that describe in terms of XDD expressions
