Abstract | The CAD models of the Kaplan and Wageningen type propellers were constructed based on the following parameters: overall propeller diameter, propeller pitch, pitch ratio, blade chord length, blade thickness and blade skew angle. For the purpose of modeling, the NACA 66-210 airfoil was selected given that contemporary propeller design are founded on airfoils belonging to the 6-Series. The dimensions and orientation of the airfoils, 'which are provided in the parametric modeling guidesheet, define the shape and structure of the blade. The features of each airfoil are rendered by a sequence of affine transformations along with the specialized functions in Unigraphics NX3. The envelope surface of the blade is formed by using the airfoils as section strings. The machining algorithms were developed using the CAM modules in Unigraphics NX3 followed by the verification in Vericut 5.4 prior to the actual machining. For the toolpath generation, the modeled propeller is first divided into different milling regions namely the front and rear blade faces, the leading and trailing blade edges, the hub faces and the lateral hub face between adjacent blades. The milling regions were then allocated among the three machining phases that is roughing, semi-finishing and finishing. All machining sequences were performed using only one setup. The total machining time to transform a cylindrical block into a propeller of200mm diameter is 47.45hrs with constant feedrate of 300mmpm |
