AbstractA chronological approach to scheduling operation a Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant (PSPP) optimally using an hourly time step is developed. An objective function defines total power cost for any hour as a function of system generation; the PSPP adds cost for any pumping hour and reduces cost for any generating hour. Hourly conservative-of-flow equations, coupled with lower and upper limits on the PSPP's storage, constraint the reservoir's hourly storages. A computer program is developed basing on Fortran 90 Compiler link with an existing nonlinear programming (NPSOL source code) optimizes the objective function while satisfying the constraint equations. The case study of Bae Ai PSPP (Vietnam), a large PSPP (1,200MW) of Central-South power system is considered for a weekly planning period for May and December 2020. On the other hand, Cai river basin is used for calibration and verification to obtained a set of good parameters of MIKE 11/NAM rainfall-runoff model. These parameters were applied to Basin under study to compute inflow of lower reservoir of Bae Ai PSPP. Moreover, this study is also considered the filling in missing rainfall data based on multiple linear regression, and hourly operating level of upper and lower reservoirs for one week for cases of May and December 2020.
