AbstractThe goal of this study is to determine the environmental flow requirements for La Nga River in central Viet Nam by applying the range of variability approach. This approach is used to evaluate the pre-dam and post-dam flows and establish the riverine management targets in terms of thirty-two hydrologic parameters called indicators of hydrologic alteration (IHAs). A reservoir-operation simulation approach is employed to compute the post-dam flows with different operation policies. Based on the simulation results, modifying reservoir operation policy would reduce the degree of hydrologic alteration. With all efforts to reduce the overall degree of hydrologic alteration to the level as natural flow regime while meeting energy demand, the energy production would reduce eleven percent whereas the overall degree of hydrologic alteration would attain forty-six percent, thus better protecting the aquatic ecosystem than the current operation policy.
