AbstractThailand is one of the important countries which belong to new trading and logistics pattern in East Asia. And in this circumstance, it is quite significant to identify the relationship between economic characteristics and structures of transportation and logistics industries in Thailand. At present, high road transport share causes substantial kinds of problems. To solve these problems, modal shift is one of the solutions in Thailand. And, it is considered that this problem gives us useful information to identify economic structures and characteristics in modal shift aspect. This study has three objectives. First is to identify the economic characteristic and structure of whole transportation in Thailand from 1975 to 2000 by input output analysis. Second is to identify the economic characteristics and structure of each mode of transportation sector by input output analysis. Third is to estimate 2005 Input output tables and evaluate the effect of modal shift to reduce energy consumption to accomplish sustainable transportation development. To achieve these objectives, three analyses were carried out. The first analysis identified that Transportation and logistics industry in Thailand had the huge progress in enormous economic development. In this development, transportation kept their share in domestic final demand. It means transportation played an important role in economic development. After high development starting, substantial foreign investments were flowed into Thailand and promoted economy. In this process, transportation had huge dependence on expmt part. The second analysis identified that there were the huge progress of road freight transport and other industries related with truck and air transport. These high share industries tended to earn substantial profits because of economic development and their enforcement. Product quantity changes of these industries had huge effect on the whole industries. These high sectors had huge price effect on construction sector. It means this transportation industries tended to play a significant role in cost management of construction. The third analysis, it was found that transportation cost of truck was the smallest among railways, truck and water transport. By the analysis of modal shift which the whole industries change to use railways and water transport, industries shift to high transportation cost. Therefore, the cost effects on the whole industries has upward trend. From this study, it is identified that transportation economy and logistics of Thailand is supported by truck sector because of his enforcement to reduce his cost and improve his services. Transportation costs of railways and water transport industries are more expensive than truck. Therefore these industries are not able to have high demand from the whole industry in Thailand. It is quite important thing for railways and water transport industries to improve their economic conditions and reduce their transportation costs to increase demand for railways and water transport.
