AbstractThe applications of sensors have increased tremendously over time and there is an augmented demand for making sensor data and services available on the Web. The recent advancements in communication technologies as well as inexpensive sensors make the deployment of a wide range of sensor systems for a plethora of applications possible. An ideal scenario would be that of Sensor Plug and Play where a sensor connection would be automatically detected and its data would be available immediately to users through the Web in a standardized format acceptable to GIS applications. This standardization can be done by a specification called the OpenGIS Sensor Observation Service (SOS) which defines an API for managing deployed sensors and retrieving sensor data. The specification defines standard XML requests and responses between a client and an SOS system for web-based retrieval of sensor data. Implementation of three core mandatory operations of the SOS GetCapabilities, DescribeSensor and GetObservation has been achieved. The system supports sensor re-configuration without changing any software inside the SOS station which contributes towards achieving Sensor Plug and Play. The implementation has been done on low power processing unites which can be deployed in hostile remote environments. This makes the acquisition of sensor data from the SOS station in remote field possible in a globally standardized format. A system for the replication of a remote field database is also implemented which can be for backup purposes as well as for collecting data from multiple SOS stations at a central point where users can subscribe to sensor services.
