AbstractForest degradation in recent decades in Myanmar is quite severe. It threatens endangered species and biodiversity and causes environmental and climate changes. Forest degradation in dry zone of Myanmar is leading to desertification. Multi-temporal 8-day composite MODIS surface reflectance and Landsat ETM+ datasets are used for monitoring forest cover changes. TERRA and AQUA NDVI datasets are combined to yield a better NDVI time-series product. Cloud effects and missing data are removed and interpolated by Local Maximum Filter algorithm. Change detection analysis for time-series datasets is performed in one year time window interval using the advantage of the nature of repeated phenology of forest. The analysis produces NDVI time-series change anomaly. The algorithm separate the actual forest cover change from seasonal changes. The actual change anomaly can be observed by the repeated changed NDVI pattern in certain period. Forest cover change is mapped by reclassifying the change anomaly image into smaller classes by deciding change threshold values. Forest cover change threshold is derived from the quantitative analysis of high spatial resolution Landsat images. The developed methodology can be operated at near real time and can closely monitor the forest at any time point.
