AbstractThe research studies the performance of the drinking water system in Xaimoungkhoun village, NaXaiThong district, and Vientiane capacity province of Lao PDR. The objectives research describe analyze peoples 'participation in contribution to maintenance/repair and monitoring of drinking water system management, assess user's satisfaction with access and adequacy quality of drinking water, and suggestion recommendation to measure for improvement of the drinking water. The research was conducts in three locations to use of drinking water supply which head-reach, middle-part and tail-end. Main paiiicipation in contribution to maintenance/repair and monitoring of drinking water included management of water system. In respond of the performance of the village drinking water system, the water users' participation in decision making on water management, also applied on the participation in operation and maintenance, the time of maintenance work that water user's paiiicipation, and pa1iicipation in monitoring of water system. Regarding the satisfaction of the water users on the performance of the DVWS, they were not clear about the objectives and activities provide in the scheme. However, the main problems of the village drinking water were identified by the water users including insufficient water poor operation and maintenance and water quality. Moreover, water adequacy in dry season and limited technical knowledge. The village drinking water system generates several types of benefits to rural households as water users for domestic consumption. The water adequacy was not sufficient on dry season. Therefore, the DVWS had limited capacity in O&M, low capacity in mobilizing technique, and among of water users, lack of time to pa1iicipation in the meeting for discussion. For recommendations were suggested to both the DVWS and water users. For the DVWS, the suggestions were given to improve of performance including provision of technical training program to DVWS and water users, water adequacy, water quality, water consumption, improving water distribution to water users and enhancing knowledge of technical. Contradictory, for water users, the main suggestion were give to them participation in activities including O&M, monitoring and also to improve the protection of water source more effectively.
