Migration of Chinese youth for higher education in Thailand: determinants and opportunities

AbstractThis research is about the migration of Chinese youth for higher education in Thailand. The main objectives of the research are to map out the background of Chinese students in Thailand, analyze the factors influencing their preferences for institutes in Thailand for higher study and identify the reasons behind it including the interinstitutional linkage, analyze their perception understanding about the career path and opp01tunities after receiving higher education in Thailand, assessment their needs and problems, and develop a strategy for attracting Chinese students to Thailand. The Chinese youth are refer to those students emolled in higher education institutes (HEis) in Thailand, whose originals are the mainland China, excluding those from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Macao SAR and Taiwan province of People's Republic of China and those Chinese nationalities from Singapore, Malaysia, or any other countries. The research was conducted in all four regions of Thailand, using a survey questionnaire with a total of 120 sampled respondents as a prime method for data collection. The research was focused on quantitative analysis but qualitative technique was also applied. The main findings of the research are the Chinese youth enrolled in HIEs are most from southern provinces especially Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Jiangxi Province and Yunnan Province, who aggregated in the central region especially Bangkok of Thailand. Most of the Chinese youth have a relative low-income families and relative not satisfying performance for the national entrance examinations for higher education in China. The factors influencing the Chinese youth selecting HEis in Thailand include the career opportunities after receiving higher education in Thailand and the ranking or reputation of HEis. The education quality, study expenditure and living cost, environments are also having strong influence on Chinese youth for their selecting HEis in Thailand. The Chinese youth for higher education in Thai HEis have a high satisfaction about the education and very high perception for career oppo1tunities and success though they met some kind of problems or difficulties in Thailand. Certain recommendations were given to improve the visibility and employability of HEis to attract more Chinese youth for higher education in Thailand in a more competitive future.
