Abstract | Food security is highly influenced through climate change in Nepal. The majority of people in the country depend upon agriculture as a major groundwork for incomes to enhance their food security. The study about the impact of climate change on food security is extremely low and has not been carried out on farmers' level. Therefore to fill up this gap, the study was conducted in four VDCs with 300HHs of Makawanpur district in Nepal. This research aims to study about the trend of temperature and rainfall, perception of farmers on climate change, impact of climate change on agriculture and food security and document the adaptation strategies practiced/followed by the farmers in agriculture sector of the study area. Both primary and secondary sources were used for data collection and supported with the relevant literatures. The changes in temperature and rainfall were clearly observed from both, the data obtained from DHM and farmers perception. The production of the major food crops like wheat, maize, rice and fresh vegetables in the country has been in relative decline since the past several years. Sometimes the total crop failure occurred due to drought, rainfall and outbreak of insect, pests and diseases. The change in the climatic pattern has resulted in the decreased crop productivity that enhances food insecurity situation of the people. The weighted average index for different indicators of food security like changes in cropping areas, decreased productivity, storage facility and spread of diseases was found to be higher in the cereal cultivating farmers. The majority of the vegetable cultivating farmers were mildly food insecure whereas cereal cultivating farmers were found to be moderately and severely food insecure compared to vegetable cultivating farmer. This was because the vegetable cultivating farmers had higher proportion of income from vegetable sale. Farmers were found to be using different adaptation measures to cope with the adverse effect of climate change. This helped to minimize the crop losses and improve the food security situation of the farmers by preventing crop loss. |
