AbstractFlooding in urban areas is an inevitable problem for many cities in south Asia. In Bangladesh, Dhaka Metropolitan area has faced with water logging for the last years. Even a little rain may cause serious problems, so some parts of Dhaka are inundated for several days. This leads to the following problems, such as traffic jams, blackout, economical and environmental damage, etc. The drainage system of Dhaka City is simulated by MOUSE. A hydrodynamic model built in two networks, street and pipe network describes both the flows in the pipes and in the streets together with the flow exchange between these two systems. In 1997, Surface Water Modelling Centre carried out a pilot study about Storm Water Drainage Modelling for Dhaka City. This study is performed as an extension and improvement of pilot study in terms of updating and analyzing drainage system together with suggestion of alleviation scenarios to relieve flood problems. With the output from MOUSE, Geographic Information System (GIS) is used as a tool to provide flood inundation maps based on digital elevation model (DEM) and simulated water levels along the street, which mainly cause surface flooding. Quantifying of physical processes, i.e. to evaluate the importance of infiltration of ground water to sewer pipes and infiltration from surface flooding to ground water including evaporation is carried out. In addition, alleviation schemes simulated by urban flooding modelling are performed for the purpose of flood mitigation. Sensitivity analysis of hydrological parameter, e.g. time of concentration will be performed to see how sensitive the model is.
