Abstract | Studies on the change in sediment regime in the lower Chao Phraya River due to the construction of the dams in the upper basins have been very scare. The data available for the rigorous studies are also quite limited under these conditions. A method for approximate estimation of the sediment transport and subsequent evaluation of the change in the sediment regime has been made in the study. The method includes four steps in which the relationship between the ratios of the bed-material rates (Sc) to the suspended ones and the discharges is first developed. The monthly Sc is computed by using Engelund-Hansen formula. The suspended rates to be desired are calculated by the calculated Sc and the established relationship. Compared with the measured transports in the rainy season in 1962 at the river mouth and Bangsai about 116 km upstream of the river mouth, the calculated mean ones in 1976- 1996 show 29% and 32% reductions, respectively, while the corresponding reduction at Nakon Sawan 379 km upstream of the river mouth is 84%. The reductions are caused by the reduction in flow (about 34%) and the sediment trapping by the large-scale dams such as the Bhmipol dam ·and the Sirikit dam. |
