Abstract | Vietnam is situated between 8.5°N to 23.5°N latitude, and 102.5°E to 109.5°E
longitude. 72.4% of the population live in rural areas where 7% of the total 9000 villages
have no access to telecommunications network. The fact is that these areas are under
developed. Telecommunications has proved to be a trigger for the development of the
economy. Tecommunications is increasingly shortening the gap between urban and rural
areas. Providing telecommunications for rural areas is the key to improve the quality of
life. In fact, the current telephone systems cannot wire all rural areas due to geographical
features.
This research study investigates the most suitable means of telecommunications for
rural areas, i.e. VSAT network. We plan a star network based on the forecasted demand for
the year 2010.
Vietnam has no satellite yet, then we assume that a satellite of Vietnam, called
Vinasat, is located at 11 o0E, and the hub station is located in Ho Chi Minh City (11°N,
107°E). Rain affects much to link budget, as Vietnam is in region N, of CCIR model with
0.3% time of the year, where rain is moderate. The height of VSAT is also a variable
parameter for calculating rain attenuation. However, we design the VSAT system for the
worst case that the height is 20m above sea level. Thus, other cases are completely
applicable.
In ;iverage, each VSAT is assumed to serve one village in which the population is
forecasted to be 6763 people in the year 2010. The satellite link budget is calculated at
BER of 10-4
, 64 kbps information bit rate, and QPSK modulation technique. |
