Abstract | Water-based settlements are a unique form of traditional settlements in Thailand. They depict the amphibious lifestyle of people and their culture. However, this unique type of traditional Thai settlements is severely affected by haphazard urban expansions and road developments. This study focuses on the impacts of urbanization on cultural environment in the Amphawa Community, which is a water-based community as well as a famous destination for tourism in Thailand. The study finds that the impacts are in the form of socio-cultural degeneration, local economic decline, and environmental degradation, which are interrelated. They are results of uncontrolled urbanization, weaknesses of plans, planning regulations and their implementation, and expansion of tourism activities. Based on the analysis of internal and external factors that creates impacts in Amphawa Community, the study makes recommendations in order to conserve the natural and cultural environment. The study proposes preventive measures to sustain the cultural environment and guidelines for the establishment of "Amphawa Cultural Environment Foundation". The study also proposes to declare a special conservation zone in Amphawa Community in order to provide the legal foundation for the proposed preventive measures |
