AbstractThe increase in urban population in Klong Luang district through both migration and natural increase has been absorbed to a large extent by the rental housing market. As the demand and advocate for the supply of low income rental housing increases, the environmental conditions of the rental stocks are been overlooked. Based on an exploratory research the study discusses demand and supply of rental housing for low income households and their environmental conditions in terms of housing qualities, overcrowding, basic services, overall satisfaction with housing units and neighbourhood. The study describes the residents' judgement and assessment of the environment in which they are living. This is done based on a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews with renters, landlords and a survey of rental apartments. The study shows that the private sector has been successful in meeting low cost housing need of renters mainly due to high demand, relatively cheap land and lack of government regulations. The study also revealed that though housing conditions are not up to standard, renters are satisfied with their housing units and neighbourhoods. The most important factors associated with this was closeness to places of work and level of privacy. The study concludes by providing possible policy, planning and management options for a viable rental scheme for low income households
