AbstractThe tourism area is a dynamic and successful field in which Internet technologies are used extensively. But, there is lack of tourism information systems that can provide intelligent features to tourists. The main idea of the Semantic Web is to develop and use machine-understandable language for expressing the semantic content of Web page that can be processed by other programs. It means that the Semantic Web does not only provide information at the syntactic level, but also at the semantic level. This research has tried to propose a new system that employs Semantic Web and GIS with aim to provide accurate, up-to-date information and some intelligent features to tourists. The tourism ontology is considered as the core of the system, and GML is selected as format for storing geographical data. The system can support users in searching information effectively. It also provides reasoning capability so that user can get implicit information from stated information. One of the most important features of the system is generating tour. Basing on user's preferences, the system automatically generates a travel tour with detailed information. A prototype web application for Ho Chi Minh city is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system
