Abstract | The construction Industry contributes significantly to the overall socio-economic development. In contrast the construction activities also contribute to the environmental damages such as depletion of non-renewable natural resources, energy consumption, airpollution, and generation of wastes. India is a developing country with many rapidly developing cities, Ahmedabad being one of them. Rapid growth of the city in the last two decades has led to massive expansion of construction activities to the fringe areas of the city. There is lack of any significant policy or regulation regarding the construction activities which poses significant threat to the local urban environment. Therefore the industry stakeholders are required to move towards more sustainable construction practices. This thesis explores outlook of the stakeholders towards sustainable construction practices and identifies the drawbacks in the existing mechanisms and the barriers to implementation of relevant mechanisms. The study involves various stakeholders in construction industry, specifically the firms involved in construction of housing construction industry. Qualitative research technique was used with in-depth interviews being the main data source. The findings of this research portray that sustainable construction concept is not familiar in the industry. It is not a concern among majority of the stakeholders. Although several barriers exist in implementing the concept, such as lack of familiarity and lack of resources, there are some attributes which promote it. |
