Abstract | River water pollution is a complex issue resulting from a combination of processes that reduce the overall river water quality. Point and non-point sources of pollution have a profound impact on the degree of pollution, and many times the actual causes are hidden behind more 'visible' causes. Understanding these causes-behind-causes is critical in developing appropriate responses to reduce pollution. This Study is based on the analysis of significance of Samut Sakhon province in Thailand for the pollution in Tha Chin River. The province has urbanized and industrialized rapidly due to its proximity to Bangkok and presence of bountiful employment opportunities. The result is in the form of unplanned, scattered industries and economic sectors leading to severe management problems in the province. The repercussions have been in the form of overall degradation of environment and heavy river water pollution in Tha chin. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the state of environment in the province, DPSIR and Spatial Analysis using GIS overlays were used. The findings have then been utilized as a basis for proposing viable strategies that may prove to be fruitful in managing the sources of pollution in the province. It is aimed that the study would prove to be consequential for long-term measures in Samut Sakhon and contribute towards sustainable development not only in the province but the entire basin. |
