Abstract | Agricultural monitoring is important to estimate crop yield. Rice is one of the important crops in Thailand and studies have been carried out in the rice fields of Suphanburi Province which is one of the major rice producing Province. Reflectance data and LAI data have been collected in the rice fields from the starting period of rice growth till the ripening stage of rice. In this study, a model to estimate field based LAI from RS based NDVI have been developed. Firstly, using the field collected data of NDVI and LAI. a model has been developed to estimate field based LAI from field based NDVI. Secondly, using the RS based NDVI data and field based NDVI data, a model to estimate field based NDVI data from RS based NDVI data has been developed. Using this model, the field based NDVI was estimated which was further used to estimate the field based LAI. The RMSE for the newly derived model has been found to be 1.0836 which is better than the previously derived model of Srinuandee with RMSE of 1.6279. The estimated LAI has been used as an input parameter in the SW APGA data assimilation technique and optimized parameters such as sowing dates and cropping intensities have been identified. It has been found that the reflectance measured at nadir and off nadir is different during the beginning stage of rice growth but the off nadir observations did not vary much from the nadir observations once the rice starts to mature. The NDVI computed from MODIS nadir BRDF adjusted data have been compared with NDVI computed from MODS surface reflectance data. It has been found that the BRDF adjusted data have a lot of voids thus being problematic to be directly used in the research |
