AbstractDamage to the underground infrastructures was one of the amazing events. However, recent failures of underground structures during recent earthquakes were reminder of the need to include seismic considerations in design details of underground structures. In this study, the current seismic design methodology for circular mined tunnels was reviewed and the Seismic performance evaluation of the Bangkok MRT Blue Line project was carried out. Twodimensional numerical simulations based on finite difference method analysis using FLAC2D were performed to simulate the BMRT tunnel model. It was observed that the tunnel can withstand 0.6g magnitude, distant subduction earthquake without collapse or loss of life. SHAKE analysis was performed to compute the elastic response spectrum for various PGA values for the local site conditions, which was used as input ground motion for the FLAC model. It was observed in the study that the selected location for the tunnel under the ground was a very good choice, as the strains in the surrounding soil are less then 0.090.
