AbstractCollaborative remote laboratory is the concept of facilitating group work while allowing remote access to experiment equipment. There have been many implementations of remote laboratories in universities with some of them providing collaborative access to the remote devices. However, all such systems only consider the design and development a single laboratory experiment. Much less work has been done in the integration of many laboratories into a single system. We propose a peer to peer based approach for the integration of multiple laboratories inside a university into a single system. We show that formation of numerous simultaneous groups, where in each group people with different roles would collaborate for a separate laboratory work, is possible. The system proposed is robust in consistently providing group formation and collaboration activities, in the presence of continuous node arrival and departure in the entire laboratory network. We also show that for data packets of low size, the use of XCAST (eXplicit Multi - Unicast) in our system decreases the stress at the sender in each group whereas due to the increased header size of the XCAST packets, it increases the total traffic flow in the whole network, as compared to using Unicast.
