AbstractMicrofinance has been considered as an efficient and effective weapon to fight against poverty. Thanks to loans from microfinance, the poor can earn their living to help themselves as well as to lighten the societal burden. In Cambodia, microfinance becomes more and more popular over one decade. Therefore, good understanding and right use of microfinance are a proper need. This research gives readers firstly an overview on the Cambodian finance sector, especially on the microfinance; secondly analysis and lesson-learnt from the transformation from a NGO to a specialized bank and then a commercial bank, the successful case of ACLEDA. The research methodology used here is document analysis and in-dept interview. Such information analysis allows author to scientifically approach to the above-mentioned objectives. It can be said that Cambodian microfinance has been well developing and contributed the most in poverty reduction. With respect to limited-capital resource NGO like ACLEDA. the three steps of transformation proved to be effective and should serve as reference guidance for other NGOs that have the same ambition.
