AbstractEffective production control systems are important for any manufacturing plan. In order to obtain practical and effective production control, several pull type production control system such as Kanban, Conwip and two types of hybrid Kanban/Conwip are proposed. In this thesis, a hypothetical manufacturing system consisting of several subassembly lines, assembly lines, multi product types are studied. The study addresses the question Which is more effective production control policy in obtaining a desired throughput level with minimum possible work in process (WIP)? Simulation models are developed to analyze and compare the four control systems for manufacturing system. Designing the input factor such as the number of cards for simulation model is important. The better input factors can give the more timely and accurate output performance measures. Thus, a combined method is implemented. Firstly, queuing network model is applied to estimate the initial input factor or card levels. By using queuing network model, it can give the quick result, which takes a role as a directional input factor for simulation model. Secondly, heuristic procedure is applied to deduct number of cards and to find out the best combination of cards that can obtain a desired throughput target with minimum possible WIP level in system. Thus, combining of both analytical method and simulation method, it is an effective method in term of getting more accurate result and quick searching time to find the best combination of cards. Simulation experiment is carried out with scenarios where deterministic and variable demand and processing time are involved. The comparison between control policies are implemented in the same production environment The key performance measures are WIP level and throughput, time in system. From the simulation result, it demonstrates that the hybrid control policies are superior to the single control policies Kanban or Conwip in term of getting the higher throughput with lower WIP.
