AbstractThe selection of the excavating, hauling, and compacting equipment has a significant effect on the profitability of an earthmoving operation. Selecting the optimum combination of equipment can result in savings in both time and cost. An optimizing model for equipment selection using genetic algorithm is presented in this study. The genetic algorithm is a technique based on evolutionary optimization. It imitates natural selection and biological evolution to achieve its power, based on survival of the fittest. The GA2000 program was developed in order to illustrate the practical application of the genetic algorithm for equipment selection. Results from the genetic algorithm are compared to that attained using the nonlinear optimization technique in solving equipment selection problem.
