Abstract | Many studies have shown that national culture varies with different management practice, such as strategic decision making (Schneider and DeMeyer, 1991), leadership style (Dorftman and Howell, 1988 and Puffer, 1993) and human resource management (Luthans, 1995). The differences between management practices and national culture would affect performance at the workplace. This study tried to investigate the effect of different cultures dimensions, based on national culture dimensions, on workplace behaviors in a joint venture construction projects in Thailand. A number of researches have been done in the field of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence provides a lot of benefits for individual and organization. In the mean time, study about emotional intelligence in the construction environment is still very rare. Therefore, this study focuses on this area. Mainly, there are three areas of study in this research. First area explores the benefit of emotional intelligence for leadership behavior of project leaders. Next area investigates the effect of emotional intelligence for conflict resolution style of project leaders. The last area concentrates on the impact of emotional intelligence of project leaders to the level of client satisfaction. The result indicated that emotional intelligence affects leadership behavior of project leaders. High emotional intelligence project leaders tend to use more open communication in leading their subordinates. Further finding revealed that emotional intelligence influences conflict resolution style of project leaders. Project leaders with high emotional intelligence have a tendency to use accommodation and collaborative style. This study indicates that emotional intelligence makes project leaders promoting harmony and resolving conflict in win-win situation. It was also discovered that emotional intelligence has an effect on client satisfaction. Clients feel dissatisfied to emotionally intelligent project leaders in term of project manager performance and adequate of authority. This is perhaps because emotionally intelligent project leaders use delegation frequently. Therefore, clients think that the project leaders achieve nothing because subordinates do the job. Further study should explore whether clients of construction industry in Thailand approve the use of delegation style |
