Abstract | The main objective of this thesis work was to study the dimensional stability measurement
of fine paper which was made of hardwood (Eucalyptus 90%)and soft wood (pine 10%)
and also to see the effect of some parameters such as degree of refining, varying filler
content, different wet pressing load and varying amount of recycled fiber. The hand sheets
were made in the laboratory on Scand avian hand sheet Former with white water
circulation.
Refining shows a positive effect on strength properties but it has a negative effect on
hygroexpansion of fine paper. Hygroexpansion increases due to swelling potential of
fibers. Restrained drying up to 6000 Revolutions has minimum influence on
hygroexpansivity but it is significant at 9000 revolutions. Free drying almost doubles
hygroexpansivity at any refining level.
Filler content and recycled fiber show more positive effect on controlling hygroexpansion.
As the amount of filler content increasing, hygroexpansion decreases. The same trend also
shows by recycled fibers.
Wet pressing also shows that it could be used to control dimensional stability of fine paper
through improved bonding strength. Among all four variables, which were studied in this
thesis work, recycled fibers control hygroexpansion in a better way.
Chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (CTMP) increased hygroexpansivity, which could not be
justified. This remains to be resolved. Addition of CTMP decreases the strength properties
but bending stiffuess increases due to stiffer fiber. As bending strength increases
hygroexpansion also increases, so to control hygroexpansion bending stiffuess should be
controlled.
