Abstract | Sustaninable development is now considered as the strategy for planning a country's progress and growth. It aims at maintaining an equilibrium between human needs and economic development, through the efficient uses of natural resources, while ensuring the suportive capacity and environmental quality within the assimilative potentail of the regiobal ecosystems. Among those ecosystems, sustainable management and development of watershed is important for country like Myanmar with more than 50% of the country is mountainous region. This study relates to applicability of the Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) for the land use adjustment in Nyaung Sh we Township of Inle watershed and to find out the priority areas for rehabilitation based on the results. The data sets used for this study are Landsat TM satellite images, topographic maps and a number of the other secondary data sets. The slope, elevation and landform were extracted from the digital terrain model (DTM) processed from topographic map of 1 :253,440. The methodologies used for the analysis of the data are based on the principle of the watershed classification as devised by the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS). The land use and land cover change assessment was carried out using landsat satellite imagines of 1995 and 2000 by employing the digital image processing techniques. Although six priority classes have been identified from data analysis using GIS, in which 2000 land use map is overlaid with watershed classes. To perform this study, both raster and vector based GIS tool was widely utilized for digitizing, overlaying, analysis and for producing the thematic maps. Soil suitability classification was carried out based on selective parameter of soil. |
