AbstractThis study has focused on knowing people's perception about community forestry and soil conservation activities catTied out to manage both forest and farm resource and people's participation in these activities in Ghamaha sub-watershed of Rupandehi district of Nepal. This study is based on both qualitative and quantitative info1mation using tools such as household survey, key informant interview, participatory observation, wealth ranking, group discussion and policy review. Based on the analysis of primary and secondary data the study looks into socio-economic condition of the study area, farmer's knowledge about importance of resources and their conservation activities, people's paiiicipation on community forestry and soil conservation activities, their perception about those activities and the policy related to that conservation activities. The finding of the study reveals that the study area is facing high population pressure with low economic oppertunities. Most of the people of the sub-watershed depend on agriculture and forest and land are the prime natural resources to fulfill their basic needs. The people of the sub-watershed are aware about importance of natural resource as well as necessity of resource conservation activities but their knowledge is confined to visible impacts. The people's perception on both community forestry and soil conservation program are positive in the watershed. Almost all people participate in the group work when user group called upon but their participation in discussion and sharing ideas seems very low. Most of the decisions on both community forestry and soil conservation program are made by male and elites of the society. Although their participation is very low they perceive that they are getting some benefit from both community forestry and soil conservation program and they are fulfilling their basic needs easily than in the past. The result indicates that the factors that influence people's participation in community forestry are government policy about CF, household characteristics, awareness about the program and need of resources. But, there is lack of mechanism to ensure voice of women, poor and disadvantage group on policy documents. So there is an urgent need of policy mechanism which can incorporate women, poor and socially disadvantaged group to actively participate on the natural resource conservation activities.
