AbstractThe thesis describes the institutions in natural resources management of traditional Katu people in the past and the present common institutions in forest management. The forest use patterns, forest dependency, factors affecting forest use and forest dependency of Katu people, Kinh people in Nam Dong district were analysed based on the data collected in three specific communes in Nam Dong, in which four villages were selected for the interviews. The investigations conducted clearly show that the well organized institutions of traditional Katu community in forest management in the past as well as some inadequacy of the present institutions in protecting and management of forest resources. The results of the study also indicate that there are great differences in forest use patterns between Katu people and Kinh people in Nam Dong, while Katu people are more dependent on forest resources and mainly harvest subsistence forest products, Kinh people on the other hand, concentrate on income generation forest products. Incomes from outside, income from grazing, ethnicity and harvesting style are the most affecting factors to forest use and forest dependency of people in Nam Dong. Beside those factors, harvesting style is a strong factor affecting to forest use and forest dependency of Katu people. For Kinh people, transportation methods increase the use of forest resources as well as to forest dependency (but income from grazing did not have any affect to Kinh people). In order to integrate conservation and development in Nam Dong, there should be different forest management practices toward the two groups of people as well as different solutions and supports to the two groups in order to reduce the pressures on forest and forest dependency of people.
