Abstract | The study was aimed to examine the success of Participatory Forestry Project which was launched during 1993-1999 .in Sri Lanka. The study confined to a comparison between protective woodlots and farmers' woodlots in the project. Primary data was gathered through questionnaire, interviews, field visits and informal discussions. Basically study was carried out under two categories namely Forestry inventory survey and Socio economic survey. Basal area and survival ratio computed in relation to selected woodlots and it was seen that both the basal area and survival ratio of farmers' woodlots were relatively higher than that of protective woodlots. Further, thinning had positive impacts on both basal area and survival ratio. Socio economic analysis revealed that there was a sizable positive change in income of participants of the project as a direct consequence. It was found that the most motive factor for pa1ticipation was benefits accrued on participants. It was seen that there was wide gap between individual interest of pa1ticipants and overall project targets. Finally it was seen that farmers woodlots were successful than protective woodlots. It is emphasized in the study the need for converging of both the interests of pa1ticipants and the project itself in an effective manner for accomplishment of project targets. Key words: Pa1ticipation, Forestry, Basal Area, Survival Ratio, Fa1mers' Woodlot, Protective Woodlot. |
