AbstractPrivate forestry is an integral part of livelihoods of local people, it has important role in meeting the basic forest product needs. The Master Plan for Forestry Sector (MPFS) has given equal importance to private forestry program with community forestry program. After MPFS plan the Forest Act 1993 came into effect and then after Forest regulation approved in year 1995. During 1985-94, Terai Community Forestry Project (TCFP) launched many seedling distribution programs in Terai region of Nepal, but unfortunately the program could not cover the four VDCs of the study area. However, farmers appeared to be planting a substantial number of trees on their farmland, even without assistance of HMG. A household survey was conducted for the research and households were selected for the interview applying random sampling methods where both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. This study aimed to identify the factors promoting private forest activities for the fulfillment of the basic needs of local people as well as generates income, employment and also helps to reduce pressure on adjoining national forest. There has been diverse in choice of species among farmers. Due to sissoo disease, more than 20 million Nepalese rupees losses beard by the respondent in research area. Some regulatory system of HMG found constraint for private forestry development. Lack of technical knowledge, lack of suitable seedlings, small land holding and protection problem of seedlings from cattle were the major problems for planting trees on farmland. The multiple regression model indicates that number of tree plantation in farmland is influenced by the survival of tree and plantation support from GO/NGO. It is supposed that increasing the support of GO and NGOs in motivation and seedling distribution program the number of seedling can be increased in the farmland in the same way the control over the fungal diseased could encourage the private plantings.
