Abstract | This research explores the Prospect for commercial production of high valued Non Timber Forest Products in Terai region, Bara district of Nepal. The overall objective of this research is to assess potentially of NTFPs for income generation and to examine the prospects of commercialization. Although, multiple comparisons were made but the main focus is between two Village Development Committee (VDC). Furthermore, the research includes assessment of the highly traded species, issues on existing collection practices, contribution of income from NTFPs in total household income, perception of stakeholders regarding cultivation and collection practices, market perspectives, and future prospects for the promotion of NTFPs in forest and private land. The analysis is based on data collected from the NTFPs collectors and cultivators of Nijgarh and Saphi Village Development Committees (VDCs), village traders, Birgung wholesalers, Indian traders, Indian wholesalers including District Workshops, and highly placed personnel of Governmental and Non Governmental Organizations (GOs/NGOs). Simple random sampling with proportional allocation was used as a sampling tool. The research represents the whole district, as the samples taken cover all types of ethnicity and NTFPs related practices. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by household survey and group meetings. Data were compiled, processed and analyzed using different tools of SPSS and Excel. Bhorla leaf, Kaulobark and Punurwa bark have been found highly traded from district, Similarly Herbs Production and Processing Company (HPPCL) initiated production of Chamomile, Mentha, and Pamarosa both in private and public land. The income from NTFPs were found substantial as its contribution is higher in total house hold income than the other sources. Collectors were not aware about real price of the species collected from wild. Although production of Medicinal and Aromatic oil is increasing, the cultivators were not found fully satisfied with the price given by the HPPCL. All stakeholders including industrialist and local people seen very much interested for commercial production if forest land available on lease basis or by any legal provision. Collaborative forest management are appreciated by the stake holders, where as threats of land capturing have been focus by government sides. Although many valuable species are under threats of extinction, in the same way there are high potential of plantation and management in government land. Some of the species, like Asparagus, Emblica officinalis are highly appreciated for domestication and cultivation in private land, Regarding markets perspectives lack of cooperatives and storage facility pointed out by all stakeholders, Similarly Export oriented commercial policy and provision of more processing industry are strongly recommended by all levels of stakeholders. Proper conducive policy of NTFPs and Integrated land use field level action plan only can increase income of villagers. Policy further needs to emphasize institutional capacity building of forestry staff, in country processing and collaboration with Biotechnically sound partners. The comprehensive program for the domestication and preference of Leasehold Forestry in favor of NTFPs based industry, productive groups are of utmost importance. |
