Abstract | In the present world, balancing economic development and environmental management to organic harmony has become a requisite. Therefore a model that depicts such harmony is valuable to exemplify the achievements for other cities. The Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) of Shenzhen has been recognized as good model to follow in Urban development and environmental management. Therefore, a case study on OCT is a valuable document to share. The main purpose of this study is to document the experiences of Shenzhen in developing OCT as a sustainable urban development model and a good environmental management practice. Shenzhen's experience has been recognized by UN-Habitat as a good foractice. Although OCT is a large site within overall Shenzhen, it is considered as a city within the city. Therefore this study limits its focus only to OCT. The study reveals the significant achievements of OCT in integrated land development by combining different economic sectors while sharing limited resources in the same area. The reasons behind these achievements are revealed as strong leadership in OCT Corporation, effective UEM practice, good environmental governance and citizen participation while maintaining economic growth. The study identify these reasons as the parameters of sustainable urban development model of OCT and recommends to replicate if in other fast growing cities in China. |
