Abstract | This research focuses on the potential of decentralized sanitation systems for upgrading sanitation condition of underserved communities in Vientiane urban area. It also explores, the possibility of sanitation upgrading through the participation approach. The study was conducted in the Thongkhankham Nea Village which is one of the largest underserved communities located in the central part of Vientiane, Lao PDR. The research finds that the highest priorities among residents in terms of sanitation are black water disposal and the grey water disposal. A suitability analysis reveals that it is practical to construct a decentralized system for wastewater disposal. The research also reveals that the residents who have no money are willing to contribute in labor. whereas those who have money are willing to share the cost of construction and maintenance. if decentralized wastewater disposal system is constructed. There exist clear preferences for a decentralized system catering a group of households. On the basis of these findings the study concludes that a decentralized system for wastewater disposal is desirable and viable. Therefore, the study recommends that the village organization should facilitate groups of households to construct communal septic tanks to dispose wastewater as a medium term solution. until the city authority is ready to implement a centralized wastewater treatment system. |
