Abstract | In this thesis, contaminant transport mechanisms in the Soft Bangkok Clay
were investigated. Experiments in laboratory scale were performed and a theoretical
model was utilized to identify coefficients involved in contaminant transport
mechanism.
Since the clay mineralogical composition controls the transport mechanism of
fine grained soils, X-ray diffraction test and cation exchange capacity of the clay was
additionally performed.
Column tests were conducted to determine the contaminant transpo1t
parameters. Tests were carried with different influents concenh·ation (NaCl, CaCh,
KC!), different hydraulic gradients (i=lOO, 50, 30) and with a different test periods
ranging from 30 to 45 days. Non-reactive and reactive h·aces were used as influents to
simulate contaminants.
The computer program POLLUTE was used to fit theoretical curves by
adjusting the values of diffusion (De) and dish·ibution (Kt) coefficients to the results
of column tests. The appropriateness of the model was justified by comparing the
experimental results with predicted values.
Batch equilibrium tests were performed to dete1mine the adsorption
characteristics of the clay with respect to a specified cations. Results from these tests
were plotted as adsorption isotherm. lsothe1m were developed for each solution. In
this way, values of dish·ibution coefficients, Kt were obtained.
The migration of different chemical species through the clay may be affected
by the tortuosity factor ( 't). This factor was also calculated by comparing the effective
diffusion coefficients (obtained from column tests) with free water diffusion
coefficients for each tracer. |
