Abstract | In a built environment, the old building stock characterizes the functional and traditional fabric of the society. These buildings have inherent component of resources conserved in them and bear tremendous potential to be dealt with from the environmental management perspective. The building stock in the Walled city area of Ahmedabad in India manifests such a historic entity of the built environment. Commercial and residential activities thrive together in these buildings, bestowing a vernacular character to the city space in its urban fabric. In wake of modern development, the old building stock has undergone major changes in adapting itself to the contemporary needs of the users. Ratan pol and Haja Patel's pol are two such streets that have witnessed morphological uses in the building stock over the years. Neglect towards these buildings may gradually lead to the dilapidation of the whole stock endangering its existence. Hence there is a need to sustain the building stock to retain this exclusive physical environment. This study attempts to explore the scope of revitalizing the building stock to sustain the built environment. The potential of achieving the intangible goals of resource conservation and environmental management through revitalization of the old building stock has been investigated therein. The attitude of various stakeholders has also been considered for the same, especially looking at the possibility of public participation for urban environmental management. Thereafter the prospect of revitalization of the building stock has been analyzed by use of specific assessment techniques. The findings have been used as a base for proposing viable implementation strategies that may serve the purpose of revitalization of the old building stock. It is hoped that the proposed measures of the research can foster the sustenance of the existing building stock and can act as a part and parcel of the overall revitalization of the Walled city. |
