AbstractBae Quang is a district of Ha Giang province in Vietnam that specializes in commercial orange farming. Bae Quang orange has been well-known over the country. Orange is an important commercial tree of the Bae Quang district that helps many farmers not only to alleviate their poverty but also makes them to become wealthy. Living in the region of commercial orange farming, most of La Chi ethnic minority households have planted orange trees on their land, but they have not developed commercial orange cultivation and still suffer from poverty. What are reasons for not being commercialized orange farming by the La Chi ethnic minority households? And what should be done in order to help them to promote their commercial orange cultivation? This study was carried out in 6 communes out of 16 communes, where La Chi ethnic minority group lives in. The study has covered reviewing the existing status and trend of orange production and problems encountered; studying socio-economic characteristics of La Chi farmers, the current farming practices, their perception in practice of commercial orange farming; analyzing farm economics of orange farming and assess income potential; analyzing effects of Government Agricultural Extension Network, and identifying factors influencing La Chi households' practice of commercial orange farming; Finally, recommendations have been made to promote the commercial orange farming for La Chi ethnic minority group. The study has found out that climate, soil condition and land holding size of La Chi households are favorable to conduct commercial orange farming. Due to low level of education and knowledge, lack of commercial orange cultivation techniques, lack of agricultural extension network's support, and difficult in accessing to credit service, etc. the La Chi ethnic minority could not commercialize orange cultivation. At the same time, the study also analyzed economic efficiency of orange cultivation and found out the model of commercial orange cultivation bringing about high economic efficiency and soil protection. Recommendations were made to Government Agricultural Extension Network, the central and local government authorities, and La Chi ethnic minority households aiming to promote commercial orange farming for the La Chi ethnic minority group in Bae Quang district, Ha Giang province.
