Dao women's contribution to household economy in Vietnam : a case study of Bavi Commune, Ha Tay Province

AbstractThe main contributions of the Dao women are in the household production and reproduction activities. However, they still face difficulty in terms of economic, cultural and religion pursuits. Dao women's contribution to household economy is high but their status is low. Addressing these issues, the research covers the socio-economic characteristics of the women workers, the analysis of the contribution of Dao women in household income, division of labor and family activities. The associated problems, opportunities and their needs are analysis. Focusing on one commune of Dao people in Ha Tay province in the North of Vietnam, this study aims to explore and analyze the contiibution of Dao women to household economy in Vietnam Based on findings, it is revealed that Dao women's contribute, as main labor force to household economic activities both in agricultural and non- agricultural sectors. Household income made by the women is higher than the men. Women are the main persons running the reproductive works, such as caring for the children and elders, and preparing the meals. In the case of Ba Vi, where the household production is diversified with many economic activities, the workload and working time of women is high in comparison with men. The study also identified that women were facing various types of problems and constraints. Most of the problems were connected to the social and political change and transition-taking place in the commune. Finally, some recommendations are made how to reduce the adverse effects on women workload and also to improve women's position in the society and their status.
