AbstractEffect on formation and paper properties was investigated based on fiber fractionation. Bleached pine kraft pulp was used as raw material. Part of the pulp was refined (1000, 3000 and 6000 rev.) in PFI mill before Bauer-McNett fractionation. Hand sheets were made in two consistencies from fraction 30: 0.017% consistency for standard handsheet and 0.4% consistency for commercial type paper machine headbox. Agitation time was evaluated (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 times) for unrefined pulp in headbox consistency. Pulp with 6000 rev. was mixed with fines (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) to measure the effect of fines on formation and paper properties. Refining and addition of fines enhance the paper properties except tear strength and light scattering coefficient. Flexible fibers make stronger paper with better formation. Addition of fines gives better formation but adding too much (>10%) causes deterioration. Increasing pulp consistency adversely affects formation and paper properties except tear strength. Crowding number does not support the formation trend for the refined pulp.
